I’m Isidro Abreu, a retired NYPD detective with over two decades on the job, including five years on the FBI New York Cyber Task Force.
In that time, I didn’t just study cybercrime from a distance. I worked cases. I sat across from the victims. I learned how these criminals think, how they pick their targets, and why some people walk away clean while others lose everything.

I joined the NYPD in 2002 with a background in computer science, long before cybercrime became a major law enforcement focus. My early years were spent as a patrol officer, learning how crime actually works from the ground up.
Over time, my work moved toward digital investigations. I later became involved in background investigations in the NYPD's Social Media Investigations Unit. While using social media to enhance the candidate screening process, I witnessed how criminals use online platforms to deceive and manipulate people at scale. Part of my work involved occasional presentations and lectures on social media best practices to graduating police academy classes.
