About Digitath | Digital Safety Advice From a Former NYPD Cyber Investigator on Online Scams
About the Founder

22 years investigating
crime in New York.
NOW HELPING FAMILIES
TAKE BACK CONTROL ONLINE.

I’m Isidro Abreu, a retired NYPD detective with over two decades on the job, including five years on the FBI New York Cyber Task Force.

In that time, I didn’t just study cybercrime from a distance. I worked cases. I sat across from the victims. I learned how these criminals think, how they pick their targets, and why some people walk away clean while others lose everything.

Here’s the thing: most of the time, it wasn’t luck that made the difference. It was information.

That’s what Digitath is about. It’s a resource built for everyday families, the kind of straightforward, no-nonsense guidance that can make the difference before something goes wrong. No jargon, no scare tactics, just clarity from someone who was in the middle of it.

You don’t need to be a tech expert to protect your family online. You just need someone who’s seen how this actually works and can show you what to do.

That’s why I built Digitath, so you don’t have to learn it the hard way.

Why This Matters

The internet is incredible, but most families were never taught how to stay safe online.

Every day, families bank, shop, learn, and connect online, but the digital world has changed faster than most people can keep up with.

Scammers now use tools like AI-generated voices, deepfake videos, and sophisticated social engineering to trick people into giving away money, passwords, or personal information.

After years of watching how these attacks unfold, one thing became clear: the people targeted most often aren't reckless or careless. They simply never learned how these attacks work.

🤖

AI Scams

Voice cloning, deepfake video calls, and AI-written phishing emails that are nearly impossible to detect without knowing what to look for.

💔

Romance Scams

Long-term cons built on manufactured trust, targeting people at vulnerable moments, costing Americans over a billion dollars every year.

🔓

Account Takeovers

Criminals are accessing email, banking, and social media accounts through techniques most people have never heard of and wouldn't recognize until it's too late.

👶

Child Safety Online

Predators and bad actors use games, apps, and social platforms to reach children in ways parents often don't realize are happening.

Where This Advice Comes From

The experience behind the advice.

I joined the NYPD in 2002 with a background in computer science, long before cybercrime became a major law enforcement focus. My early years were spent as a patrol officer, learning how crime actually works from the ground up.

Over time, my work moved toward digital investigations. I later became involved in background investigations in the NYPD's Social Media Investigations Unit. While using social media to enhance the candidate screening process, I witnessed how criminals use online platforms to deceive and manipulate people at scale. Part of my work involved occasional presentations and lectures on social media best practices to graduating police academy classes.

"In 2019, I was assigned to the FBI's New York Joint Cyber Task Force. During those five years, I saw how attacks on hospitals, utilities, and government systems are planned and executed, and I watched how the same tactics used against major institutions are adapted to target everyday families."

That experience showed me something important: the knowledge investigators use to recognize these threats isn't complicated, but it's rarely shared with the people who need it most.

Why I Created Digitath

Turning investigative experience into a digital neighborhood watch for families.

When I retired from law enforcement in 2024, one thing stayed with me: the knowledge investigators use to recognize scams and cyber threats isn't available to most families.

The tactics I watched cybercriminals use against private sector companies and government agencies are the same ones being used against parents, seniors, and everyday people every day. The only difference is that no one briefs families the way officials are briefed.

Digitath exists to close that gap. Here you'll find simple, practical explanations of how online scams work and what you can do to protect yourself and the people you care about.

🎣 How scammers actually operate — and why their tactics work
📧 How to recognize phishing, fraud, and social engineering
🔑 How to protect your accounts and devices from common attacks
👨‍👩‍👧 How to keep kids safer online in a world designed to deceive them

Everything on Digitath is written with one goal: helping families stay one step ahead of the people trying to deceive them online.
